Migrating Microsoft Identity Integration Server 2003 (MIIS) and Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007 (ILM) to Forefront Identity Manager 2010 (FIM)
Forefront Identity Manager 2010 has added significantly more Identity Management capabilities over and above its predecessor products (MIIS and ILM), which offered identity and password synchronization, user provisioning, and digital certificate and smart card management
Forefront Identity Manager 2010 new features and capabilities include:
- Policy Management – FIM allows organizations to integrate and automate their business process through a policy management framework that utilizes a SharePoint-based platform with workflow capabilities.
- Group Management – FIM integrates with native Active Directory groups and can utilize policy rules to manage their membership, either dynamically or manually.
- User Management – In addition to the original provisioning capability, FIM, through its SharePoint-based portal, now provides users with the ability to view and manage their own identity information, in line with established business policies and workflows.
- Self-Service Password Reset – FIM provides the ability for Windows users to reset their own passwords using simple shared secrets, known only to the user. FIM’s password self-service capability can dramatically reduce help desk costs.
Avaleris can assist organizations to not only migrate their existing MIIS or ILM deployments to the new FIM architecture, but to also assist them in planning and deploying some of the new capabilities available with FIM 2010.
While MIIS and ILM current deployments can be migrated to the new FIM 2010 architecture, Avaleris strongly recommends that an initial workshop be conducted in order to review the current deployment scenarios, assess whether or not they are meeting your organization’s current business requirements, and discuss the overall project approach.
This workshop would aim to achieve the following:
- Discuss existing MIIS or ILM deployment scenarios and any additional identity management business requirements;
- Present FIM 2010 and provide a live demonstration to highlight the new features and capabilities and discuss potential areas to leverage the new infrastructure;
- Discuss migration plans and possible approaches; and
- Agree on overall project objectives and approach.
Following the migration workshop, Avaleris would develop a more detailed Statement of Work outlining the scope, approach and estimated effort to help your organization move to the FIM 2010 platform and start capitalizing on its new capabilities and features.
